My First Sermon
24 October 2007
A Prayer a Day
We're all familiar with the saying, "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away." There's many good reasons for that saying. First of all, an apple is a fruit and it is healthy to eat at least one apple daily. An apple has many vitamins and minerals that the body needs to keep it healthy and strong. An apple is a good source of vitamin C, which helps keep the immune system in check. And there's only 50 calories per medium apple. Yet most of us choose to ignore the apple. So it is with prayer.
"A prayer a day, keeps temptation away". Is that a familiar saying? No! But it should be. Most of us should be saying prayers several times a day. We all know what an apple is. An apple is a fruit that is round in shape and can be red or green or gold. It is very juicy and sweet when we bite into it. But do you know what prayer is?
Prayer is our direct line with heaven. Prayer is a communication process that allows us to talk to God! Prayer is just as good for you as an apple. NO! It's even better. There's many reasons for saying that. A prayer is a dialogue with Christ. A prayer can help your immune systems just as well as that apple. It lifts the spirit and makes us happy. Happy is a good state of mind. Pleasant thoughts make us happy as should our prayers.
Prayers contain no calories, but they pack a punch for the day to day living struggles we all must endure and allow us to keep going as strong Christians. Prayers of thanks, prayers to receive, prayers to help, there are so many different types of prayers and they all are all helpful in some way for each of us. You might say that prayers are good for us like the apple. Prayers are a good thing.
We should be talking to God praising and thanking Him for the wonderful gifts that we have and receive in our daily lives. We should pray for others as well, so that they may receive the bounty and blessings from the Lord. We should be praying for peace. We should be praying for starvation to be wiped out in the world. There are so many different types of prayers and we all should pray at least once daily. It's a start, then pray two prayers, three a day and so on. The prayers will be lifted up into heaven and eventually all our prayers will be answered.
Just like the apple, we all choose to ignore prayers. We should learn from the wonderful health aspects of an apple that prayer is more beneficial on this earth, and after, than the apple is. Eat an apple a day for the body and say a prayer a day for the soul. Let the new saying be, "An apple a day can keep the doctor away but a prayer a day can keep temptation away." Amen...
